First CDMA Snapdragon-based Smartphone to be Launched by LG Electronics
The first smartphone adopting Qualcomm’s CDMA Snapdragon chipset will soon be introduced in Korea through LG Electronics and LG Telecom, the smallest mobile operator.
LG released its first Snapdragon-based smartphone at the eXpo last year in the U.S., and recently said it will launch new Android phones adopting Qualcomm’s 1 Ghz chipset. The company plans to offer its first Android phones for Korean customers through all of three mobile carriers: SK Telecom, KT and LG Telecom. LG Telecom has only the CDMA network, which is different from the other two major operators who have both a WCDMA and CDMA network. This means that LG cannot use the QSD 8250 chipset that is designed for GSM, GPRS, EDGE and the HSPA network for LG Telecom.
Alternatively LG selected the QSD 8650 chipset which supports CDMA2000 1X and 1x EV-DO Release 0/A/B as well as GSM, GPRS, EDGE and HSPA for LG Telecom.
Qualcomm Korea confirmed to Telecoms Korea, LG will the first company to select the QSD 8650 chipset in the global industry.
Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chipset is gaining momentum with the booming smartphone market. Starting from Toshiba’s TG01, the Snapdragon landed at LG eXpo, HTC HD2 and the Acer Liquid series. The latest 1 Ghz chipset will go into Google’s Nexus One. Sony Ericsson’s first Android phone, which is expected to be introduced in February in the global market will also adopt the Snapdragon chipset.
According to Qualcomm, the enhanced Snapdragon chipset, QSD 8672 will be commercially launched in the first half of next year.
Meanwhile, smartbooks, originally a main target of the Snapdragon chipset, is relatively delayed in comparison to utilization by smartphones. The first models unveiled at CES 2010 were through HP and Lenovo.
In Korea, the first smartbook will be first introduced at the end of this year, about a one-year delay, as mentioned at the Mobile Monday Seoul event last year.
