“iPhone 4G” Coming to Korea in June
Apple’s next version of iPhone, likely to be named, “iPhone 4G,” is expected to be introduced in in Korea this June.
KT, the exclusive iPhone distributor in Korea and Apple have recently signed a deal to launch the iPhone 4G in the local market at the same time as a worldwide release, as reported today by a local newspaper, ETNews, quoting internal sources of KT and Apple Korea.
According to Apple Korea, the iPhone 4G will be enhanced over the former version in both hardware and software. For hardware, the 4G iPhone will offer more battery life, up to double that of the old model, and two camera modules for a video-call service. The video-call service will be introduced in Korea first, according to the newspaper. KT is also considering a mobile-TV service through the new iPhone.
Prior to officially launching to the consumer market, KT plans to first offer a test model of the iPhone 4G to corporate customers as early as April or May in a trial service. To boost its FMC (Fixed Mobile Convergence) service, KT appears to be trying to enter the enterprise market with the 4G iPhone. KT, however, has not yet decided weather or not to offer the FMC service to general consumers.
The iPhone 3GS has sold around 200,000 units as of the end of 2009 since its official debut on November 27. Apple’s iconic smartphone has topped the bestseller list in the local smartphone market in the shortest amount of time. Samsung Electronic’s T Omnia sold around 160,000 over a year period, while the T Omnia 2 sold around 120,000 units in November and December.
The 4G iPhone will be produced in China, similar to the iPhone 3GS.
