The first Android phone in Korea, scheduled to launch next month through SK Telecom, the biggest mobile carrier, will be Motorola’s XT-720, according to industry sources.

According to a brief note by Mirae Asset Research today, the XT-720 adopts Android version 2.0 and is equipped with a Cortex processor. The smartphone has a 3.7-inch TFT LCD and 5-megapixel camera module. Other features include GPS, Wi-Fi connectivity and multi-tasking.

A blog site revealed more details with a photo of the XT-720. According to the blog, the XT-720 has a 8-megapixel camera, not 5 megapixel, and it supports Mobile TV (T-DMB), Bluetooth, and HDMI.

Last year, Motorola launched its first Android phone, the Cliq and Droid in the U.S. and both smartphones were introduced in other countries with different names, Dext and Milestone, respectively. Motorola also unveiled its new Android platform-based smartphone, named “BackFlip” at CES, Las Vegas.

Meanwhile, SK Telecom did give any details related to its first Android phone, except that it will be provided by Motorola. In a response to TelecomsKorea’s email inquiry, Motorola Korea’s spokesperson said, “Presently, we have a nothing to comment.”

While SK Telecom announced it will introduced over 13 kinds of Android phones this year, including Motorola’s model, KT is also expected to increase the Android line-up following its rival company, said Mirae Asset. With the Android portfolio, KT is aiming to reduce dependence on the Apple iPhone, the report said.

Recent survey results by research firm ROA Group, 54 percent of mobile experts said Android-based smartphones will lead the Korean smartphone market due to industry-wide backing while the iPhone had a 27 percent response.

Regarding the “survey” by ROA group

Like these same experts said that the iphone would fail right out of the gate? Is Oh Sung Kwon, of Kyobo Securities, one of them? I don’t have alot of respect for the analysts here who operate on very little data and metrics.
