First Windows Phone-based Smartphone Coming to Korea
LG Telecom, the smallest mobile carrier in Korea, announced it will introduce a Microsoft Windows Phone (formerly Windows Mobile 6.5)-based smartphone, called the “OZ Omnia” (SPH-M7350) this month.
The OZ Omnia, one of Samsung Electronics’ Omnia smartphone series, is the first model adopting the Windows Phone operating system in the local market. SK Telecom’s “T Omnia II” and KT’s “Show Omnia” are also porting from the old version of the Microsoft operating system.
Far behind its competitors, SK Telecom and KT in a smartphone line-up, LG Telecom plans to offer the high-end smartphone with a lower price tag and up to free-of-charge depending on service contract.
Due to the expected popularity of Apple’s iPhone by KT, SK Telecom has increased the subsidies for the Samsung smartphone, and eventually LG Telecom will join the subsidy competition with its competitors.
Different from other smartphones, the OZ Omnia selected a Korean version of a wireless Internet platform called “WIPI,” which is familiar with local customers, the company said.
