Development and sales of products working on UWB(Ultra Wide Band) and 60㎓ frequency band are set to be allowed without having to get government approval.

The Ministry of Information and Communication announced Monday that it would distribute UWB frequencies. They are 3.1-4.8㎓(Low Band) and 7.2-10.2㎓(High Band). With UWB, people can connect PC, printer and other electronic gadgets wirelessly in small areas like homes and offices to send data at the speed of hundreds Mbps.

The US and Israel have completed to develop UWB technologies and are working on commercialization while Korea’s Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) developed MB-OFDM system and succeeded in testing with digital TV.

ETRI aims at increasing the transmission speed of UWB chip from current 200Mbps, to 600Mbps-1Gbps.

The government also distributes 60㎓ portion of the radio frequency spectrum to enable wireless communication with 1Gbps transmission speed between buildings within 1km area where it’s difficult to set up fixed line networks.
