Samsung to Disclose Mobile WiMAX, New Touch-screen at MWC
Samsung Electronics, the world’s second-largest handset maker, will showcase its new products based on next-generation mobile wireless technology at a mobile show to be held in Spain next week, the company said Wednesday.
At this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC), slated to run from Monday through Thursday next week in Barcelona, Samsung plans to unveil a mobile WiMax base station and a slew of mobile devices with built-in WiMax features, the company said in a release.
WiMax, which stands for worldwide interoperability for microwave access, is one of two next-generation mobile wireless technology standards supported by Inteland cable companies. It enables remote Internet access even from fast moving vehicles. The technology is in competition with LTE, or long term evolution, which is backed by Sweden’s Ericsson and major phone companies.
Samsung said its new WiMax base station, named U-RAS smart, reduces power consumption and has enhanced coverage. The upcoming M8400 smartphone model, among Samsung’s commercial mobile WiMax devices to be featured at the congress, has built-in mobile WiMax, wireless fidelity and wideband CDMA, it added.
Samsung is also expected to disclose a new touchscreen technology dubbed super AMOLED, or active-matrix organic light-emitting diode, in the world’s biggest mobile exhibition.
The new touchscreen is an improved version of the AMOLED screen with enhanced clarity and better visibility in sunlight, the company said. AMOLED screens have been widely adopted in handsets including Google’s Nexus One.
