Samsung Electronics, the world’s largest memory chipmaker, said Tuesday that it will start mass producing a 27-nanometer based NAND flash memory chip in the second quarter of this year.

“Samsung completed developing 27-nanometer process NAND flash in October and we plan to mass produce them from the second quarter,” a Samsung official said by phone.

Samsung will be one of three global memory manufacturers to produce NAND flash memory based on below 30-nanometer technology. NAND flash memory chips are used to store data and files in digital cameras, music players and smartphones.

IM Flash Technologies, a joint venture by chipmakers Intel and Micron Technology, is expected to roll out a 25-nanometer NAND flash memory device in the second quarter. South Korea’s Hynix Semiconductor, the world’s second-largest memory maker, said earlier in the day that its 26-nanometer NAND flash will be produced beginning in the third quarter.
