Hynix Earns Performance Certificate on Carbon Emissions
Hynix Semiconductor, the world’s second largest chipmaker, said Thursday one of its chips has earned the South Korean government’s performance certificate on carbon emissions.
The performance certificate on carbon emissions places a mark on the product, showing how much carbon dioxide was emitted during its life-cycle.
Hynix said its 1-gigabit double-data-rate-three (DDR3) chip was certified by the Ministry of Environment as emitting 602 grams of carbon dioxide in the process from production to disposal.
It was the first time that a computer memory chip was certified in such a manner, according to Hynix.
“The certification will be the standard of the products Hynix will continue developing onward,” Hynix said in an emailed statement. “It can be also used in calculating the emissions of the finished products.”
The chipmaker said it will continue on its efforts to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, by adopting low-carbon materials and equipments.
