Samsung TD-SCDMA Phone to Boost Chinese 3G Service

Submitted by TKorea on 2004/12/12 – 12:00 amNo Comment

amsung succeeded in developing the world first TD-SCDMA handset, edging out Chinese local makers as well as Nokia and Motorola and thereby proved its technology competence superior to any other handset maker in the world.

The achievement will serve as the stepping stone for the handset maker to predominate the TD-SCDMA market, the company emphasized.

TD-SCDMA is the 3G wireless technology jointly developed by Datang Telecom of China and Siemens of Germany. Unlike CDMA2000 and WCDMA using Frequency Division Duplex (FDD), TD-SCDMA based on TDD or Time Division Duplex is capable of asymmetric data transmission and suitable for large capacity data transmission.

The success in TD-SCDMA trial performance gave the Chinese government’s confidence in Chinese 3G standard and, Samsung expects, will boost TD-SCDMA service in the country. The Chinese government is planning to issue the 3G license and run TD-SCDMA service on a trial basis along with CDMA2000 and WCDMA before deciding on its commercialization.

Samsung Electronics says "There has been concern in the country about TD-SCDMA development being behind schedule. Against this backdrop, Samsung’s modem chip development and the success in the trial call bolstered the morale of TD-SCDMA supporters in China. China announced its plan to operate TD-SCDMA on a trial basis before it starts the commercial service in late 2005. “
